Phylogeography

The contemporary distribution of different genealogical lineages is affected by past climatic and geological events. This can be studied by inferring events that have happened in the past such as population bottlenecks, colonisation history, and migration. I studied how past climatic events such as the last glacial maximum (LGM) and geological features such as the deep river valleys in the Himalayas have affected the current distribution of different populations of the Himalayan langur (Semnopithecus schistaceus). Here I analysed various demographic parameters, investigated colonisation history in a model-based hypothesis testing framework using the ABC approach, and niche modelling using current and past bioclimatic layers for different populations.
